Lodge Combo Cooker — The Baker’s Trick for Easy Loaf Placement
The Combo Cooker’s superpower is its design: a 3.2qt deep pot and a shallow skillet lid that nests under the pot. For bread baking, place your dough on the shallow lid (upside down), invert the deep pot over it as a cloche, and load it into the oven — avoiding the dangerous maneuver of dropping hot dough into a 500°F pot.
Bread baking protocol
Preheat both pieces at 500°F for 45 minutes. Slide parchment + dough onto the skillet lid. Lower the pot over the dough (the pot acts as a cloche, trapping steam). Bake covered 20 minutes, uncover and bake 20 minutes more. The open bottom design also lets you score the dough at the last moment without rushing.
The skillet lid standalone
The 10.25” skillet lid is a functional cooking vessel on its own — use it as a pan for smaller cooks when the full Dutch oven setup isn’t needed.
Why it beats a traditional Dutch oven for bread
Loading dough from above into a 500°F pot with vertical sides is awkward and burns forearms. The Combo Cooker’s horizontal loading eliminates this risk entirely.
