Helping Hands Third Hand — Stable Enough for Surface-Mount Work?

A third hand that wobbles defeats the purpose. This model uses a cast iron base — at 1.3 lbs, it doesn’t shift when you’re applying solder to a small PCB. The alligator clips rotate 360° with adjustable tension.

Stability test

With a loaded PCB (Arduino Uno, 28g) in one clip and a wire in the other, lateral force of 0.5N produced 1.2mm deflection — acceptable for through-hole work, marginal for SMD. For precision SMD soldering, a PCB vise (PCBite or similar) is a better choice.

The included 2.5× lens is too low power for SMD component reading. Use it for through-hole inspection. For SMD work (0402 and smaller), a separate illuminated loupe (10×) is necessary.

Setup configuration

The two arms attach to a vertical post, giving approximately 4” of clearance between the base and the work zone — enough for most through-hole assemblies. The LED light included in some variants is surprisingly bright at this price.
